  History

Tutbury Castle is located in East Staffordshire close to the border with Derbyshire. It was built in the 11th Century and is mentioned in the Domesday Book although building work continued well into the 15th Century. Mary, Queen on Scots was held in the castle on four separate occasions during the 16th Century and it has been described as her "most hated prison". Parliament ordered the destruction of the castle during the English Civil War in 1647. Fortunately this was not successful. The folly tower was added in the 19th Century and the 20th Century saw extensive preservation and excavation work carried out with area such as The Great Hall were re-opened to the public. The current Curator of the Castle is Most Haunted Historian, Lesley Smith.
